Congratulations! You’ve got your student registration number and now you’re looking forward to starting your practical training. While you’re probably bursting with adrenaline and excitement, it’s normal to feel a little bit nervous too. But don’t worry, our consultants are here to help! Carry on reading for insight into what to expect on your first week of practical training.
Expect to feel overwhelmed
On your first few days, it will feel like you’ve been thrown in the deep end with no arm bands but that’s part of the learning process! Take in as much as you can and we promise in no time you’ll get into the swing of things and learn how the practice runs.
Get involved
The best way to learn is to get involved where you can – whether that be bandaging up a patient or helping insert an IV catheter. Don’t worry about getting in the way either, everyone knows that you’re a student learning on the job. Just ask where to stand and if you can help next time you’re watching a procedure.
Talk to people
Starting a new role in any sector can be nerve wracking, especially when you first walk into a room full of strangers. We recommend pushing through any awkwardness by making an effort to introduce yourself to as many people as possible. That way, you can get to know who does what and where to go if you need help. Plus, you have your clinical coach to hand whenever you have any questions or need some support.
Don’t compare yourself
Practice makes perfect, so there’s no point getting frustrated because your more experienced colleague can take blood in one easy take and you can’t even find the vein! Even if other students are doing ‘better’ than you in some areas, comparing yourself isn’t going to help anyone. Focus on bettering yourself and remember everyone learns at a different pace – you’ll get to the finish line eventually!
Final word of advice
Take it easy on yourself and don’t expect to know everything right away. Everyone you work with was once in the same boat and have developed their skills with time and practice. Be confident – you’ve got this!
Choice Vets supports all new SVNs and wishes you all the best of luck on your first practical.
