How to write an interview follow-up email

Still not heard back after your job interview? In this blog, our expert consultants share their top tips on how to politely follow up via email.

How long should I wait until I follow up?

Sending a keen email the minute your interview ends is not a good look and certainly won’t boost your chances of getting hired. As a rule of thumb, it is best to wait two weeks until chasing your interviewer.

How should I write it?

  • Address it to the person who interviewed you (always make a mental note of their name during the interview!).

“Dear [interviewer’s name]”

  • Thank your interviewer and remind them of who you are and the role you’re applying for

“Thank you for taking the time to interview me for X position. It was lovely to meet you and I really enjoyed learning more about the role.”

  • Mention something specific that excites you or something significant discussed in the interview

E.g. “I’m very passionate about this opportunity to become a part of the [company name] team. Y initiative that we discussed particularly took my interest and I’m enthusiastic about the prospect of helping deliver it.”

  • Invite the employer to ask you further questions

“Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide to assist in the decision-making process.”

  • Politely hint that you are expecting a reply

“I look forward to hearing back from you.”

or

“Any updates you could provide on my application’s progress would be much appreciated.”
