How is pay transparency improving in the veterinary sector?

The British Veterinary Association has created a guide to help promote more transparent conversations around pay in the veterinary sector.

The resource, ‘Talking About Pay in the Veterinary Profession,’ offers advice on how to discuss salary in the workplace.

It also shares insight into how to structure conversations around pay rises, as well as what employers can do to ensure pay is fair.

Launched as part of the BVA’s Good Veterinary Workplaces campaign, the guide is designed for everyone in the veterinary field; from recent graduates, through to senior managers. There is advice tailored to each level of expertise.

Inside, readers will also find information on the importance of pay transparency

BVA President, Malcolm Morley, says: “Fair, transparent and equal pay is one of the keystones of good veterinary workplaces. It’s vital that everyone feels confident that their workplace approaches pay in a clear and consistent way,”

“This isn’t about paying everyone more,” he adds.

“It’s about using objective criteria and transparent pay scales to ensure the whole team understands how decisions about reward and recognition are made and what they can do to access higher pay.”

The guide arrives after a survey revealed that 77% of vets prioritise pay when job hunting, yet only 42% rated their salary as“good,” “very good” or “excellent.”

It is hoped that this resource will help improve employee satisfaction and retention rates in the veterinary space.
