Networking for introverts

Gearing up for a networking event? More on the introverted side? No need to fear! Networking is an art that takes time and effort to master, especially if you’re not naturally extroverted. Here’s a few tips to help you out…

Be yourself

Authenticity goes a long way. Rather than pretend to be someone you’re not, play on what makes you unique. Nervous? Make a joke about how awkward networking can be – this is better than fumbling your words and will naturally break the ice. People will respect you more if you are upfront and trying, than faking and breaking!

Do what works for you

There is no ‘right’ way to network – just find out what works for you via trial and error. We’d recommend attending smaller networking events to start with and working your way up as you grow in confidence. It can sometimes be reassuring to bring a colleague along with you for support.

Know your ‘why’

You should always have a reason for attending a networking event – whether its to learn something new or find new career opportunities, go in with a clear agenda. It might sound silly but it can be advantageous to plan ahead when it comes to conversation starters, and even answers to questions you might get asked.

Let your passion shine through

If you’re not naturally extraverted, you might find it hard to express your passion for veterinary care with others. Try and move the conversation towards your experiences as a professional and what you have achieved recently – this might be easier in one-to-one settings to begin.

Take time to recharge

While it’s great to jump in the deep end with networking events, it’s equally important to recognise when your social battery needs recharging. Try and take a few days between networking events to gather your thoughts and reserve your energy for the next social. If you’re in back-to-back meetings, this also applies – it might be worth grabbing a coffee or going for a walk in between discussions so you can stay focused and engaged.
