BSAVA event to demonstrate realities of being a vet

The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) has announced the return of its  ‘real-world’ inspired event which aims to demonstrate the realities of being a vet.

Sessions will take place on Thursday 23rd March and Saturday 25th March at Manchester Central, with each practical designed to showcase challenges you may encounter in practice.

‘Day in the Life of’ events at BSAVA Congress 2023 will incorporate a blend of live acting, interactive practicals, clinical CPD and topical discussions.

Highlighted as a standout session, ‘Live Case Work Ups’ will see the host diagnose a patient, live, with no prior knowledge of the animal’s condition. It is hoped this demonstration will help illustrate the unpredictable nature of practising veterinary medicine, first-hand.

Congress Committee Chair/host of the mystery diagnosis session, Paul Higgs said: “It’s all very well giving a lecture on the best way to approach a case when everything is under your control, but this is different! Add in the jeopardy of an owner (Actor) on stage, an unknown complex case and my reputation on the line and it gets a little nearer to real life.

“We have never tried this before, but I will be working up an otherwise unknown case, live on stage, under the watchful eye of another medicine specialist and the audience. Demonstrating a logical approach to each case (hopefully), including problem lists, differentials and interpreting results live, I hope to make it to the diagnosis and keep the owner on board too!”

We encourage all veterinary professionals and students to attend the BSAVA Congress if possible as it offers a fantastic opportunity to get some CPD under your belt and learn from the best in the business, up close and personal!
